Body Composition Treatment: Understand Your Body Beyond the Scale

HomeWellness Programs, King City, ONBody Composition Treatment

Do you know that your weight might stay the same while you lose body fat and gain muscle?

Also, your measurements might change even when the number on the scale barely moves. This is why understanding your body composition can give you a much clearer picture of what is happening inside your body.

At Heal House, we use Visbody, a bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) device, to assess body composition in about five minutes. It gives us a detailed baseline that can be used to understand where you are starting and monitor changes as you work toward your health and wellness goals.

What Is Body Composition?

Body composition refers to the different components that make up your body.

Instead of looking only at your total body weight, a body composition test looks at things such as body fat, lean body mass, skeletal muscle, and body water.

This can be useful because two people can weigh exactly the same but have very different amounts of muscle and body fat.

For example, someone who is strength training may gain muscle while losing fat. Their weight may not change much, but their body composition has improved.

That is why body composition can provide information that a traditional scale cannot.

What Is a Body Composition Test?

A body composition test is an assessment that estimates the different components of your body.

At Heal House, we use Visbody, an advanced BIA device, to collect a range of measurements during a quick assessment.

Your Visbody assessment can measure or estimate:

  • Body fat percentage: the percentage of your total body weight made up of fat
  • Total fat mass: the actual amount of fat in your body
  • Fat-free or lean body mass: everything in your body other than fat
  • Skeletal muscle mass: an important measure when looking at strength, metabolism, physical performance and healthy aging
  • Segmental muscle analysis: shows muscle distribution across your arms, legs and trunk
  • Segmental fat analysis: provides insight into where fat is distributed throughout your body
  • Visceral fat estimate: estimates fat stored around the internal organs
  • Body water: provides insight into your hydration status
  • Basal metabolic rate (BMR): estimates the calories your body uses at rest
  • Waist and hip circumference
  • Waist-to-hip ratio: a useful measure when looking at central body fat and metabolic health
  • Other body circumferences: helping track physical changes that body weight alone may not show
  • 3D body model: provides a visual representation of your body shape and changes over time
  • Posture and body alignment: available on certain Visbody systems

The result is a much more complete picture than simply knowing your weight.

Why Does Body Composition Matter?

Your body composition can tell you more about your health and physical changes than weight alone.

For example, if you are following a nutrition, exercise, or wellness program, you may want to know whether the changes you are making are affecting your body fat and muscle mass.

This is particularly useful if your goal involves:

  • Reducing body fat
  • Maintaining or increasing muscle mass
  • Supporting healthy aging
  • Improving body measurements
  • Supporting metabolic health
  • Tracking changes during a weight management program
  • Monitoring progress with exercise or lifestyle changes

A body composition assessment does not determine your health on its own. Instead, it provides useful information that can be considered alongside your health history, lifestyle, goals, and other assessments.

What Causes Changes in Body Composition?

Your body composition naturally changes throughout life.

Age is one factor. As we get older, maintaining muscle mass can become more challenging, particularly without regular resistance exercise.

Other factors can include nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress, hormones, genetics, and overall lifestyle.

Changes in body composition can also happen when your activity level changes, your diet changes, or you are following a structured weight management or wellness program.

The important thing is not to focus on one number.

Looking at several measurements together can help create a better understanding of what is changing and why.

Can You Get Rid of Unhealthy Body Composition?

There is no single type of “body composition” that needs to be eliminated.

Instead, body composition can be improved by working toward healthier levels of body fat while maintaining or building lean muscle, depending on your individual needs.

What that looks like will be different for everyone.

For one person, the focus may be reducing excess body fat. For another, it may be maintaining muscle while losing weight. Someone else may be more interested in building strength or supporting healthy aging.

This is why we believe it is important to measure first rather than guessing.

Your Baseline Is the Starting Point

At Heal House, we begin with a baseline body composition assessment.

The Visbody assessment takes approximately five minutes, making it a simple addition to your wellness journey.

Once your baseline has been established, we can use follow-up assessments to monitor changes over time.

This is particularly helpful when you are following a structured program.

Instead of asking, “Did I lose weight?”, you can look at a broader set of questions:

  • Has my body fat changed?
  • Am I maintaining my muscle mass?
  • Have my measurements changed?
  • Has my body shape changed?
  • What has changed since my starting assessment?

These measurements can make progress easier to understand and give you information beyond what you see on a bathroom scale.

How Often Should You Have a Body Composition Test?

There is no one schedule that is right for everyone.

The appropriate frequency depends on your goals and the program you are following. Repeating the assessment at suitable intervals allows you to compare your results with your original baseline and see whether meaningful changes are taking place.

The key is consistency.

Using the same assessment method over time makes it easier to track trends rather than focusing on day-to-day fluctuations.

If you want to understand your body beyond the scale, book a body composition assessment at Heal House and take the first step toward measuring your progress more meaningfully.
